Some of our fave eateries share beer + food suggestions for Sheffield Beer Week.
Sheffield is a city that loves its beer, and you'll find this reflected in the drinks menus at some of its best independent eateries. For Sheffield Beer Week, we asked a handful of our favourite places to suggest pairings between their beer and food menus. So get into the Beer Week spirit on a meal out this week, give these tips a go, and who knows, you might just discover a favourite new flavour combination.
Ashoka has been tickling Sheffield's tastebuds since 1967. The Ecclesall Road curry house has the city at its heart with the mantra "inspired by India – made in Sheffield", and this extends into its beer menu as well as its food menu (which, by the way, manages to sneak in Sheffield's favourite sauce, Henderson's Relish). The beer lineup salutes Sheffield's love of beer, with local breweries Thornbridge, Bradfield and Abbeydale represented alongside the classic Cobra. These pairing suggestions come straight from owner Rahul Amin.
- Henderson’s House Puri + Bradfield's Farmers Blonde
The lightly spiced potato and Hendo’s appetiser works well with delicate creamy blonde session ale from Bradfield. Perfect to start before moving onto some of the other suggestions.
- TaxiDriverCurry™ + Abbeydale's Heathen
The robust flavours of garlic, ginger and chilli-spiked minced lamb and chicken tikka need an equally powerful sparring partner. Heathen handles it with ease. It just works.
- Karamelised Kashmiri™ + Thornbridge's Jaipur
The richness of the caramelised onions is counterbalanced perfectly with the tropical bitter mouthfeel of Jaipur. We've been selling Jaipur since it was first produced and it’s great with our most popular dish.
Picture House Social:
The canteen in this speakeasy-style Abbeydale Road bar serves up the best pizza in town, with toppings ranging from Italian cold cuts and spicy sausages to fresh chillies and crunchy veg. The bar, meanwhile, is laden with cans and bottles of craft beers from near and far. These tantalising twosomes between bar and canteen offerings come suggested by Picture House Social's bar manager Will. PHS also features in our beer trail through the Antiques Quarter, one of four trails that you'll find in our Sheffield Ale Trails flyer – free from various venues across the city in time for Beer Week.
- Arancini + Angelo Poretti 4
The dry refreshing finish of Italy’s best beer cleanses the palate after each umami-filled bite of Italy’s best snack, arancini (deep-fried risotto balls).
- Pizza: Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Red Chilli and Parmesan + Lervig's Hoppy Joe
The earthy, deep flavours of purple sprouting broccoli are complemented perfectly by Hoppy Joe's darker, American red notes.
- Pizza: Coppa, Pecorino and Green Pepper Jam + Brass Castle's Hoptical Illusion
One of our favourite pizzas, this perfectly balanced meeting of flavours is a great companion to Brass Castle's hop-forward pale.
- Pizza: Nduja and Salsiccia Napoli + Tiny Rebel's Clwb Tropicana
Tiny Rebel Brewing Co's explosion of tropical flavour cuts right through the rich spice of nduja sausage, making every bite as fulfilling as the last.
As part of their Sheffield Beer Week celebrations, the Riverside is hosting a week-long tap takeover by Brew York. The York-based brewery will be bringing 15 different cask and keg beers to the pub for the week – so it's only natural that they feature heavily in these food and beer pairing suggestions. Look out for our free Sheffield Ale Trails doing the rounds in the city during Sheffield Beer Week too – the Riverside features as a stop in our street art pub crawl, thanks to the brilliant nautical mural by Phlegm that covers the side of the pub overlooking the river. The pub is also on the edge of Kelham Island, for anyone looking to spend more time in this real ale paradise.
- Cheese and Bacon Burger + Brew York's Sim Cit-E American Pale Ale
Citrus, mango and pine flavours combine in this pale ale, bringing a bit of a tropical BBQ vibe to this dish.
- Pie + Brew York's Keras Pale
See the board for today's pie choices – whatever's between the pastry, it'll go down well with this American style session pale.
- Cashew Nut and Aubergine Korma + Brew York's Big Eagle IPA
Big citrus flavours from the beer, complementing the pep of this dish.
- Cider Braised Pork Belly + Brew York's Tonkoko Milk Stout
The brewery describe this beer as "basically Bounty in a glass". Infused with coconut, it makes a particularly unique pair with this hearty dish.
- Fish and Chips + Brew York's Maris the Otter
A classic English bitter for a classic English dish, on Fish and Chip Friday.
- Tandoori Chicken Burger + Stancill's Sheffield Pilsner
Pilsner is a perfect beer for foods that are sweet and spicy, and this best-selling local beer gets on very nicely with this tandoori taste.
Has earth anything to show more fair than a pint of ale and a fat golden pie? There’s nowhere better to enjoy this hearty combination than the Broadie. The beers change pretty quickly at this popular Abbeydale Road pub, so they'll be keeping their menu of suggested pairings between pies/sausages and beers updated throughout the week. With a pie and sausage menu as interesting and varied as the beer lineup (and always featuring excellent veggie options), rest assured there'll be a match for you whatever time you visit this week.
All suggested beer and food pairings subject to availability.
