Take me there

Cafe #9 is like nowhere else in the city, and is our idea of cafe perfection.

Somehow Cafe #9 managed to evade our attention for years, but we’re making up for lost time now: we can’t get enough of the place, with it’s wood lined interior, chess sets, ace music and warm cinnamon rolls.

Cafe #9 is a proper neighbourhood cafe – people tend to pitch up for a coffee and end up staying for hours chatting to old friends and new faces, getting lost in a book or a game of chess, tucking into a toastie and enjoying the tunes. It wins our best in show rosette for Sheffield's most laid back cafe, and that's no mean feat in our famously laid back city.

Now under new ownership, Johnny and Steve have big plans for this small space. Currently open late on a Wednesday evening for free acoustic music nights, the plan is to turn #9 into a venue for musicians looking for an intimate setting. We can't wait. Until then, take your pick from their piles of papers and escape from the world on the other side of the window for an hour or two. Look out for the occasional film screenings too.

OFP TOP TIP: on a Wednesday tea time Nether Edge Pizza Company bring their mobile pizza oven to Cafe #9 and cook up all kinds of doughy deliciousness. It's become our favourite night of the week (we alternate between the pizza and Thelma's Burger & Shake night across the road). You can have a take-away pizza or settle down inside the cafe and enjoy your tea with some free live music and friendly locals. Hell, you can even take your own booze. We told you they were laid back.
