It used to be mainly real ale that encouraged people to make the pilgrimage to Kelham Island. Now, pizza (Craft and Dough), vintage wares (Nichols Building) and doughnuts (The Depot) attract those who in the past might not have looked beyond the Devonshire Quarter for independent cafes, shops and restaurants in central Sheffield. And of course, since 2010, there’s been The Grind Cafe and its famous sausage rolls.

Its current neighbours are the Little Kelham construction site and former industrial works in varying states of dereliction and repurposing, and yet, even on a dismal Thursday afternoon, every table at The Grind is occupied. The main reason for that is the ambitious menu that owners Amanda and Howard Wade serve on a daily basis. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, they put together an impressive array of homemade dishes.

Breakfast is an almost regal affair at The Grind. Lunch options range from the simple but delicious salads and sandwiches to more elaborate daily specials like smoked salmon fishcakes with lemon and spring onion or beef and three-cheese lasagne. Then there’s the Grind sausage roll, which has become famous in its own right. Not many cafes can boast the fact that Sheffield's very own Arctic Monkeys once ordered their sausage rolls as refreshment for the crowd at a Don Valley gig. And there’s an unwritten rule amongst the Grind's clientele: one cannot leave until sampling one of the many creative cakes that are placed tantalisingly at the counter.

Add to the menu a relaxing and amiable atmosphere, and you’ll get why a visit to The Grind is a treat in itself. While away the morning with a paper and some people-watching next to the big windows, pull up a chair at one of the thick wooden tables at lunchtime, or just let this charming gastro-cafe considerably lift your spirits during the daily grind.
