Exquisite Bodies is an exhibition of work-in-the-making by a collective of four artists who work primarily with ceramics.
Rebecca Brown, Meghan Downs, Bethany Stafford and Hannah Staniforth each approach the material differently, working with different techniques and ways of making such as casting, throwing, hand-building, pinching and coiling. Their individual practices range from decorative illustrated plates and slab built architectural sculptures to slip-cast porcelain forms to slip-decorated tableware, complementing each other through a shared appreciation of the material.
The artists will collaborate live in the gallery space during the exhibition, making large-scale ceramic pieces and combining their respective strengths and styles based on the drawing game known as exquisite corpse, whereby an image is collectively created by each participant drawing in turn.
Each artist will start to create a piece of work in their chosen method of building before passing it on to the next artist to continue working on in a fluid process – using stoneware as the one chosen clay ‘body’ throughout. The exhibition is a rare chance to see pieces at the various stages of their creation, while each artist has also created a new collection of work specially for display alongside the works-in-progress.
Open Thursday 11am-7pm, Friday-Sunday 11am-4pm (excluding Easter Sunday).
