Andy Jackson presents New Dawns / Last Year, an exhibition of paintings at Yorkshire Artspace's Exchange Place Studios. Responding to fly-posters found in the streets of Sheffield during the pandemic, this new work challenges notions of authorship.
Andy highlights small details in these posters, giving them new significance. In the resulting paintings, ink-drips, weathering and marks of vandalism are as important as the messaging itself.
The artist playfully layers messages, appropriating slogans and drawing attention to intruding slap-tags and scrawled graffiti. In doing so, he reveals a multitude of disparate voices and questions how they co-exist in the public domain.
The resulting works sit somewhere between their source and new forms of artistic communication. Does the act of painting add to or subtract from the source material? And does it amplify or subdue the voice of the original author?
