John Hoyland is famous for his exuberant, wonderous, large, bold, colourful canvases. A constant rebel in the art world, early in his career he refused to conform to artistic fashions and stereotypes, dedicating himself to painting when it was very unfashionable. In the last decade of his artist career, Hoyland embraced pure imaginative freedom.
This freedom of expression will be explored in the practical painting workshop with practising artist and experienced tutor Donna Brewins-Cook. Students will be encouraged to explore and translate their emotional states onto canvas.
Participants will firstly visit the Millennium Gallery exhibition John Hoyland: The Last Paintings with the tutor to explore their own personal feelings and emotions toward the works, then in true Hoyland approach will express these emotions through colour and various painting techniques. After various experimental works in the morning, the afternoon will be dedicated to painting on the floor on large, raw pieces of canvas. This is a chance for students to really get physical with the medium and to explore their inner world in a visual context.
No previous painting experience is necessary as the tutor will guide students through all the processes in a relaxed, friendly and inclusive environment.
All materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.
