Described as a ‘cover’ rather than a remake of the 1977 classic by Dario Argento, this new version of Suspiria is from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino. Again, we find ourselves following American Susie Bannon, now played by Dakota Johnson, at a prestigious European dance academy where all is darker than it seems.
Featuring a stand out performance from Tilda Swinton in more than one role, the new Suspiria re-imagines traditional depictions of witchcraft, with hints of Cronenbergian body horror and Lovecraftian gore. The Fosse-inspired dance sequences stand out as some of the most inspired in cinema, whilst the absence of primary-colours in the palette places the film away from Argento’s hyper-rich original. Perfect for a spooky late night at the cinema.
