LGBT+ History Month in Sheffield

LGBT+ History Month was founded 18 years ago by Schools OUT, a charity making educational institutions safe spaces for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities. It now takes place each February. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the first Pride March in the UK. The theme for LGBT+ History Month 2022 is Politics In Art: The Arc Is Long. It’s inspired by the phrase “the personal is political,” which was a frequent rallying slogan at Pride, popularised by second wave feminists and enriched by the critique of Black lesbian writer Audre Lorde. The theme also nods to a famous Martin Luther King Jr quote: “the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice.”

For this anniversary, Schools OUT selected five LGBT+ artists to focus on: Keith Haring, Doris Brabham Hatt, Fiore de Henriquez, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Mark Aguhar. These artists used their work politically, and each represents one of the LGBT letters and the plus symbol. Find out more about them in LGBT+ History Month's resources.

Events across the country will be honouring queer history and the importance of art in the struggle towards justice. They'll help us resist, and nurture a sense of belonging and community.
