The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Step behind the scenes at Sheffield Museums with their curators for a wonderful chance to have a closer look at many of the items in the Sheffield collection that are not currently on display.

You'll see a variety of fascinating objects from the different collections that relate to this year's Heritage Open Days theme: Astounding Inventions.

Sheffield Museum’s collection store is in the northeast of the city. Its location and arrival instructions will be sent to ticket-holders by email before the event.

Numbers are extremely limited – booking is essential.

There'll be four tours on the day, focussing on different collections.

The tours:

10–11am: Metalwork and natural sciences

11am–12pm: Visual art, social history and archaeology

1–2pm: Metalwork and natural sciences

2–3pm: Visual art, social history and archaeology

Trace Sheffield's social history and learn about life and nature in further flung parts of the world. The museum sits in one of the city's prettiest green spaces, next to blossom trees, a bandstand and pond.

Shepherd Wheel Workshop

Shepherd Wheel is one of more than a hundred water-powered grinding wheels that were once in action in Sheffield. It's a great little stop on a Porter Valley walk, a few minutes from Endcliffe Park.
