The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Kokomo City

A refreshingly unfiltered documentary, Kokomo City presents the stories of four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York and how the frankness they share collides with the everyday as they unapologetically break down the walls of their profession, with cutting social commentary.

Shot in striking black and white, Kokomo City is unfiltered, unabashed and unapologetic. Director D. Smith and her subjects smash the standard for authenticity, offering a refreshing rawness and vulnerability unconcerned with politeness. Holding absolutely nothing back, the film vibrates with energy and hard-earned wisdom.

D. Smith is a two-time Grammy-nominated producer, singer, and songwriter. Smith made history as the first trans woman cast on a US primetime unscripted TV show. This vital portrait, edited and shot by Smith, is her feature directorial debut and winner of the the 2023 Sundance Film Festival's Audience Award.
