Join Reclaim the Frame for their next Sheffield screening: Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power. From artist filmmaker Nina Menkes, the film is a mesmerising visual journey through Hollywood's sexist bloodstream. It investigates the use of gendered techniques in filmmaking and how toxic imagery has real world consequences.
Through more than 175 clips, ranging from Scorsese’s Raging Bull and Hitchcock’s Vertigo to Denis Villeneueve’s Blade Runner 2049 and Alex Garland's Ex-Machina, this documentary unveils the misogynistic implications behind the images we celebrate. Menkes interviews ground-breaking directors such as Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust), Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), and seminal film theorist Laura Mulvey. Along the way, she interrogates every corner of the sexist Hollywood system – from the workers, to the stars, to the audience – and invites her audience to do the same.
There'll be an introduction from Reclaim the Frame's Toni Lee, and a post-film Q&A with director Nina Menkes and Reclaim The Frame’s Melanie Iredale.
