Join Out of the Archive at Millennium Gallery for an afternoon talk celebrating the women working in non-traditional trades today.
You’ll hear about the careers of women in male dominated trades in this special event in conjunction with the current display at the Millennium Gallery, Spanners in the Works: Gwenda's Garage, Section 28, and feminist activism in 1980s Sheffield.
The event will start with an inspirational short film showing how young role models are changing perception of what women can do. Members of WEST (Women in Engineering, Science and Technology) will then speak about their experience working industries such as construction and engineering.
Spanners in the Works tells the remarkable story of Gwenda’s Garage, a lesbian-run car-repair workshop that operated in Sheffield in the 1980s. Gwenda’s was also a hub for feminist campaigns, rallying against Section 28, the legislation that aimed to criminalise the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality.
Speakers will include:
Heating engineer Kay Eccles
Builder Laura Birchenough
Sajhda Parveen, Trustee of WEST and Senior lecturer in Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University
Ros Wollen, founder member of Gwenda’s Garage and educator of many women in manual trades
There will also be merchandise associated with the project available to purchase on the day.
