Take inspiration from the wonderful history of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and create a pendant and earrings in the Studio Budgie Galore workshop.
Artist and jewellery maker Julie-Ann Weiss of Studio Budgie Galore will lead you in a day of sights, sounds and silver at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. After introductions, you’ll spend the morning exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site, finding inspiration in the architecture and history of the scythe and steelworks and more than 300 years of history.
You’ll have chance to take photographs of the waterwheel or make sketches of the tilt hammers and grindstones, or meander round to the dam and take inspiration from nature and the local wildlife – you may be lucky and spot the heron waiting for a fish! You’ll then gather in the workshop to discuss our findings and have an introduction to the tools and equipment.
In the afternoon, you’ll explore a range of jewellery making techniques and processes to translate your research ideas on to metal. Working with aluminium, copper, brass and silver you will make at least one piece of jewellery.
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners or those with some previous jewellery making experience. All materials are included in the cost including paper, a range of drawing media, mixed metals and findings. You may wish to bring along your own notebook or camera, but this not essential.
