Modern Nature combine the sounds of classic British folk, free jazz, indie rock and Americana to create meandering, elegant and expansive soundscapes.
Taking their name from the published diary of Derek Jarman – the highly influential director, designer, author, and gay rights activist – their critically acclaimed records explore themes from nature to religion, social ignorance and literature. Featuring an array of musicians from across the globe, including saxophonist Jeff Tobias from New York jazz ensemble Sunwatchers, they are led by Jack Cooper (formerly of Mazes and Ultimate Painting). Pitchfork said of their latest album, Island of Noise: “its songs are subtly overstuffed, brimming with layers of luxurious melody and imaginative variation”.
