The Hallamshire House is Thornbridge Brewery's Crookesmoor outpost, with a gorgeous wood-panelled bar, comfy nooks, and one of the city's few snooker lounges. What really sets the Hallamshire apart, though, is the Secret Garden tucked away behind it: a cosy den where ivy climbs the walls and wildlife ranges from roses and sunflowers to sweet peas and trailing lobelia

You can read a full list of the plants being grown in the garden up on the chalkboard overlooking the decked terrace, where paint-pot ashtrays sit on top of picnic benches and old whisky barrels. In the covered cellar-type space that leads up to the bar you'll find colourfully painted dining room chairs, sofas you could drown in, classy beer labels stuck up neatly on celadon green brickwork, and sometimes even a DJ and a BBQ. Let's face it, when British summertime comes round, it's handy having a beer garden with some equally pleasant outdoor shelter you can escape to.
