Created by playwright, composer and ex Chumbawumba membr Boff Whalley in 2015, the Commoners Choir are an open and inclusive choir of up to 70 people that meet to sing, write and practice in Leeds. In their own words, they ‘come from all over the place, and try to act more like a band or a gang than a choir’. They sing their own compositions about ‘the world immediately around us, about inequality, hope, and Tory politicians’.
Following in the footsteps of the folk tradition, their songs tackle serious social issues with a good dose of humour. Subjects covered include: the Etonians who rule over us, mental struggles, Peterloo, joining George Orwell on the Road to Wigan Pier, what it means to be British, and much more.
