Dublin singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell burst onto the international folk music scene with two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017 and has since been hailed by the greats of Irish folk music.
His breakthrough album, ‘True Born Irishman’, introduced him as a remarkable new voice in Irish traditional music, leading him to win Best Newcomer and Best Traditional Track awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2017. He has gone on to perform across the world, receive numerous honours, from nominations, awards and acclaim from respected publications, and receive endorsements from the likes of Christy Moore, Mark Radcliffe, and Donal Lunny. His latest studio album ‘The Wedding Above in Glencree’ (February 2023) had Folk Radio UK claiming “he has the best Irish traditional voice currently around”.
With over 150,000 listeners, Farrell has toured Ireland, UK, USA and Australia, as well as playing shows across Europe. He has also toured the USA as a vocalist for Lunasa, performed in the UK in the line-up of the renowned Transatlantic Sessions and played to a live and TV audience at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall. As well as touring internationally, Farrell still hones his art with regular unannounced visits to the many sessions across the city of Dublin. He also provided solace for many in lockdown with 25 consecutive weekly online performances from his ‘Covid Corner’, with over 15,000 views each week. Looking ahead, in 2027 the Tonkünstler Orchestra and Farrell will perform songs and tunes from Farrell’s catalogue, arranged by Gast Waltzing, in the Musikverein in Vienna.
‘His powerfully unadorned vocals might be from any era, variously recalling Paul Brady and Andy Irvine…it’s a powerful statement.’ **** Mojo
