English Teacher thrive on unpredictability. Blending indie rock, prog, folk, and electronica into an expansive sound of their own, their music is constantly in motion – melodies twist and unravel, time signatures fracture and reform – they seem incapable of writing a song in the “standard” structure.
At the heart of it all is Lily Fontaine’s wry lyricism that shifts between the opaque and abstract to the romantic and cuttingly straight forward.
It’s this exploration of sound, genre, and tone that has propelled English Teacher beyond the crowded post-punk landscape. Their 2024 debut album, This Could Be Texas, earned them the Mercury Music Prize, and in 2025 they were nominated for the Best New Artist at the Brit Awards.
