From Ayumu Watanabe (acclaimed director of the award-winning Children of the Sea) and STUDIO 4C (the studio behind the outstanding Tekkonkinkreet, and the phenomenal Animatrix), Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko is a heartwarming and moving comedy-drama about an unconventional family, based on the popular novel by Kanako Nishi.
Nikuko is a brash, jolly, and passionate woman in an otherwise sleepy seaside town in northern Japan. She's also the single mother of 11-year-old Kikuko, who is her opposite in almost every way.
In contrast to her mother, Kikuko is a pensive, quietly curious young girl, and methodical in how she approaches life (enhanced with touches of magical realism from her ever-present imagination). She wants nothing more than to fit in as she navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school. Nikuko embarrasses Kikuko as any mum of a pre-teen would, but Nikuko's bold spirit makes her especially well-known in a town where Kikuko wants nothing more than to simply blend in.
In this small harbour town, life is peaceful until a shocking revelation from the past threatens to uproot their tender relationship.
