Discover the lives of Sheffield locals, who contributed to their community in creative ways.
Opened in 1857 as a separate burial ground for St Phillips Church, Wardsend Cemetery is a unique space rich in both heritage and nature. Amongst the nearly 30,000 stories, the 'wild' nature of the site supports biodiversity and nature recovery.
This year, as part of Heritage Open Days' Creativity Unwrapped theme, Young Creators will host an immersive experience on 16 September. They'll take people on a tour through Wardsend Cemetery, rediscovering the fascinating individuals who are buried here. From carvers to engravers, photographers to painters, performers to musicians – uncover the stories from the soil.
No booking required.
Cyanotype workshop
11am–1pm
You can also join a drop-in workshop on the green space (where the chapel once stood). Cyanotype photography is a playful and experimental camera-less technique. Using paper that is coated with chemicals, and leaves, plants, etc as your subject matter, you'll create your own stunning Prussian blue and white image by exposing it to sunlight. Suitable for ages 10 and above (all children must be accompanied by an adult).
This event is part of New Wave, a series of innovative youth-led events being produced for this year’s Heritage Open Days festival.
