On the side of Bloc Projects' gallery on Eyre Lane, the Bloc Billboard creates a unique outdoor space for a programme of temporary outdoor artworks. Launching the 2023 billboard programme is Grief must be Love with Nowhere to Go, a collaboration between Manchester-based artists Chris Alton and Emily Simpson. It's available to view outside the gallery at any time of day from 23 January until 23 May.
Over the last two years, the artists have held gatherings to explore grief and language. Having each been through a significant loss in their mid-20s, they found the English vocabulary for communicating grief and loss to be inadequate. By speaking with others about their experiences, they aimed to find common ground and feel out new vocabulary.
What does life look and feel like after the death of someone or something dear? Unreliable, complicated and persistent, Chris and Emily seek to demonstrate grief’s mutability in a billboard that will similarly shift over its four-month lifespan.
