In 1982, a spaceship appears over Johannesburg, South Africa.
Humans waited for a hostile attack, or for giant advances in technology. Neither came.
Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift camp called "District 9" as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.
Decades have now past since the aliens first arrived, and patience over the alien situation has run out.
A private company has been tasked with re-locating the aliens, and a field agent suddenly finds himself the most hunted man alive, after an accident in District 9 begins to alter his DNA.
Released to critical-acclaim in 2009, District 9 is a fantastic science-fiction thriller with a unique documentary-style format, exploring themes around refugees, segregation, forced labour, racism and the "other" still relevant today, with biting social satire.
