Explore the richness and diversity of Chinese cinema across Hong Kong and mainland China.
From iconic 1980s classics to contemporary masterpieces, this season examines how filmmakers have used genre to explore desire, identity, violence, and historical change.
No prior knowledge of Chinese cinema is required. This course is designed for anyone interested in film culture, global cinema, or East Asian history.
Across four screenings and four lecture / discussion sessions, we will consider how Chinese-language filmmakers have expanded global cinema and how their work reflects the social transformations of Hong Kong and China.
This course will be led by Dr Wayne Wong, Lecturer in East Asian Studies at University of Sheffield.
