Join the foraging and fermenting enthusiasts from Social Pickle for their third annual Pickle Fest in November 2023.
Pickle Fest is a celebration of all things fermented, pickled and preserved. This year's event takes place at SADACCA’s (Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association) G-Mill space. It brings together pickling fans and newcomers alike, to share and taste homemade creations, alongside activities and live entertainment.
If you've got something bubbling away in jars, bring it along for the community-judged pickle competition. Get hands-on at workshops and enjoy the bands while you sample and vote for your favourite chutneys, jams, hot sauces and more.
Workshops
Running 3–5pm, workshops include beginner-friendly communal, drop-in sauerkraut making (bring a jar to take some home!). There'll be chance to create your own custom merch at a DIY screen printing workshop – bring along your old t-shirts and tea towels. And there'll be a creation station with drop in arts activities.
Market stall
Social Pickle's stall will be stocked with some of their latest creations. Alongside it will be a quiet ‘fermenting thoughts’ corner, with mini-library and chill out zone.
Entertainment
A glut of local artists, bands and DJs will provide the evening's entertainment, with a special guest to announce the champions of Pickle Fest ‘23.
Food and drink
A home-cooked vegan menu will be on sale 4–7pm, made from donated and surplus food. There'll also be an alcoholic bar run by SADACCA and Social Pickle will be serving up some warming non-alcoholic drinks.
Competition
The community-judged pickle contest is open to anyone to enter – and anyone to judge. You can submit homemade preserves into eight categories: jams, chutneys, pickles, ferments, drinks and vinegars (non-alcoholic please), hot sauce, NOT hot sauce, and firm ferments (along the lines of cheese and miso). Submissions are open 3–5pm. Make sure to make enough, use clean jars and make a note of any allergens. Tasting and (collective) judging is open 5–7pm. The people's pickle champions and runner-ups of each category will be announced at 9pm.
Tickets are a suggested donation of £5 waged / £3 unwaged – book now.
Social Pickle operate a pay-what-you can model so no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
