Freshmans was one of the first – if not THE first – Sheffield-based shops to ride the wave of pre-loved fashion. Back in the early noughties, before vintage stores were commonplace and buying pre-loved meant shuffling around a charity shop with your fingers crossed, Freshmans burst onto the high street with its psychedelic, multi-coloured signage and its racks and racks of nostalgic fashion. Since then, the sign has been toned down a little bit, but the shop has stayed largely the same. The stock has continued to revolve around the classics – checked shirts, woolly jumpers, wax jackets, bomber jackets, Levi's, polo shirts – with additional lines of leg-warmers, cowboy boots, cut-off tights and translucent dome umbrellas where necessary. The shop’s commitment to timeless, iconic styles, rather than of-the-moment fashion has seen it stand the test of time; in the years Freshmans has stood on Carver Street, numerous vintage shops have opened and closed in Sheffield.
