This event is for women and marginalised genders.
Join Key of She for a 2.5-hour workshop designed to get people comfortable with the basics of improvised music. The organisers cap the workshops at 12–15 people to ensure a nice mixture of different groups, and you get the support you need.
You don't need to know music theory, read music, or even play your instrument to a high standard in order to improvise! Just come with a curious and open-mind, and be very willing to make noise and support other people's noise-making.
There will be a short break in the middle of the workshop, and the venue has a café available for refreshments (and you're welcome to bring your own).
A drum kit, keyboard, and some mics will be provided. Guitars can be amplified (either PA or small amplifier). Otherwise, please bring your instrument. There is a budget for anyone local who cannot afford to transport their instrument in order to access the workshops. Please email keyofshesheffield@gmail.com if you'd like to access this.
Theatre Deli is wheelchair accessible, with parking just outside the building entrance.
All Key of She events are free, thanks to funding, but if you can donate, this enables them to keep getting funding and creating more opportunities.
Facilitator: Emma Coleman
Emma Coleman is a singer, cellist and workshop leader based in Yorkshire. Since discovering the world of vocal improvisation in 2015, she hasn’t looked back! Emma is fascinated by this magical melting pot and the alchemy between individual expression, collaborative creativity, and human connection that this musical universe invites.
Her eclectic musical journey grew from orchestral roots and has taken a scenic route via Indian classical music, contemporary folk, experimental jazz, and immersive theatre. Most recently, Emma brings her artistry to restorative yoga with improvised cello/harp/voice, playful nursery spaces in collaboration with dancers, and euphoric festival shows with the sun-soaked Afro-folk quintet, Me and My Friends.
Back in the land of vocal improv, Emma sings with Oöm, co-produces the UK Vocal Improv Festival Retreat, and delights in hosting a smorgasbord of spaces for vocal play and discovery – from intimate one-to-one Witnessed Solos online, to joyous large-group celebrations inspired by Música do Círculo in Brazil. In her hometown Leeds, she is currently offering Vocal Playground: Intro to Collaborative Vocal Improv; short courses to dive deep into exploring making-stuff-up-from-scratch with voice and body.
From her workshops, expect everything from juicy harmonies to toe-tapping body percussion, always a warm welcome, a gentle invitation to tickle your edges, and a large dose of playfulness and joy.
